Embrace a SIMPLE home life

Life is so busy. Everyone is busy. I believe with all my heart we are TOO busy. One aspect of living the Charlotte Mason lifestyle that DREW me in was…the simple life.

Children flying kites in the afternoon, planting gardens, eating dinner together… all of those hallmarks of the simple life.

In the day we live, we have to be purposeful to live a more simple life. We have to say, “no” more.

Homeschooling our children allows us to live this life.

In my course for homeschool moms, Rhythms, I teach you to create this kind of “simple life” with homeschool lessons finished by lunch and plenty of afternoon space for children to thrive! Build forts, learn an instrument, play in a sandbox…the way life used to be!

Charlotte Mason said, “Boys and girls must have time to invent episodes, carry on adventures, live heroic lives, lay sieges and carry forts, even if the fortress be an old armchair; and in these affairs, the elders must neither meddle nor make”

In the last 10 years, I have made a very firm decision to pursue this simple, educational life. We are in no way perfect! 😊

Our day consists of:

  • Family meals
  • Books
  • Jumping rope
  • Chores
  • Evenings by fire ( in the winter)
  • Conversations in the kitchen
  • “School lessons”
  • Walks together
  • Pulling weeds in our garden
  • Caring for livestock
  • Naps
  • Woodworking outside

Our culture does not promote this type of life. Instead, we are dragged into every “new” device or new modern technology. While I don’t reject the use of technology, I do believe it should be limited. Technology in itself should never be the sole means to entertain our children.

Three Ideas to Embrace a More Simple Life

Homeschool.

Homeschooling your children will allow you to finish your lessons by lunch and your children will have the precious FREE time children need to grow and thrive. Many times in a large classroom setting that requires extra classroom management, children have to wait many additional hours for school to end.

In a homeschool setting, with one on one tutoring, your child can finish his lessons before lunch and have time for leisure and imagination.

A Productive Life.

We are surrounded by a culture of consumers. Everything marketed to us is for “ease”. Children have lost the art of making things, learning home skills, and being producers.

Children can learn many things when life slows down!

  • Basket weaving
  • Study the night sky
  • Knitting
  • Woodworking
  • Pottery
  • Bead work
  • Sketching
  • Sewing
  • Baking
  • Food Preservation
  • First Aid classes
  • Organizing a room
  • Setting the table
  • Ironing

These are just a very small sampling of “ideas” children can learn in the afternoons when their lives are more simple.

Rhythms of Home give you the tools to create your own rhythm and peace at home.

A Rich Home Life

Create an environment in your home for rest, learning, spiritual growth, beauty, and health.

The British educator, Charlotte Mason, said up to a whole third of education is the atmosphere.

“Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life” ~Charlotte Mason

A home should offer more than physical nourishment but also a place to rest our souls.

As I’ve said many times, our home isn’t perfect but I always keep this goal in mind.

I add relaxing music in our background, display peaceful art, and our home has a simple rhythm that the children can count on.

I have talked with countless moms that need help with setting up a routine at home. When I started my journey to creating this type of home, I didn’t know anyone else doing it. So, I traveled and visited some mothers that appeared to be successful in managing their homes.

10 years later, I understand much better how to “be” productive and enjoy a simple life. Not perfect, but progress!
